SOLAR CAMP

*SOLAR CAMP IS NO LONGER IN OPERATION*

SOLAR is a fantastic summer New Years camp for youth aged 13 years+, running from the 29th Dec – 2nd Jan every year at Lakes Ranch in Rotorua.

SOLAR is being run under the direction of Steve Green, Vanessa Johnson and Mike Turinsky with support from a team of people from a variety of churches and organisations including Young Life New Zealand, Elim Christian Centre, Venia Management and Lakes Ranch.

Vision
Our vision is simple:

SOLAR aims to provide a safe camping environment over the New Year period where young people can be both introduced to God and challenged to grow in their relationship with Him. Our goal is to provide a positive, encouraging community environment that is also alcohol and drug free. The programme will be written to encourage connection, build a fun atmosphere while enjoying all the elements of a Kiwi Summer.

SOLAR is a church based camping endeavor, and is a tool for churches to unify together to provide a place during the summer for un-churched youth and churched youth to gather and encounter Christ in a real and authentic way. SOLAR is a "leader centered" camp. In other words, a camp that helps/allows each church youth leader to connect deeper, relationally with their students. The local church youth leaders are really the driving force behind camp and create the link for the youth back to the churches/youth ministries after camp. Our heart with SOLAR is to help different centers reach un-churched youth from their local area and to strengthen and build the local church.

Philosophy
Our philosophy is based around Incarnational Camping. The main focuses being:

                •     Leader centered
                •    Relationship driven
                •    Orientation towards un-churched young people
                •    Young people are highly valued
                •    Church building

Below is a brief outline of what camp will look like:

Picture
Programme Outline
Each day will include Morning and night meetings each 1½ hours each filled with speakers, music, performances, and challenges.

Outside of the meetings there will be free time and other activities including water sports, crafts, sports competitions, swimming, workshops, hot pools, seminars, horse riding, tribal team activities and a café running all day.

Also after the night meetings there will be dance parties, performances, movies etc…

Connect Groups
At the end of each day youth will have supper in their connect groups of maximum 12 youth with a connect group leader. Youth will split into connect groups based on their natural friend / peer groups and will be lead by their local youth leader. Youth leaders will lead and build relationships with the youth that they bring to camp. Connect group leaders main jobs are to build relationships with youth throughout camp and lead discussions based around issues and topics raised during camp.

New Years

New years will be brought in with style with our themed New Years Party. New Year’s party includes live bands, DJ, dance party and midnight worship session.

Tent Towns

All accommodation at camp is done in tents with Boys and Girls sleeping in separate tent towns. The boys and girls are then split into smaller tent town areas or tribes based on where they come from in New Zealand. Each tent town/tribe area has its own tent town parents and group of cluster leaders.

Village

The village area is really the hub of activity at camp. In the village are you will find the SOLAR Café, craft area, sports field, radio station. This is where youth come and hang out during the day and at night it becomes a buzz of activity.
